A large upper ridge was anchored over most of the eastern U.S., which kept the hurricane on a westward track. Although Hurricane Gustav remained well south of Georgia, the hurricane was so large that the outer most bands fired up during the afternoon, resulting in scattered thunderstorms across central Georgia.
